What’s new in OJS 3.5

Until June 2026, most YDJ journals used OJS 3.3. If you have previously used one of these older versions OJS, you may wish to learn about new features of version 3.5:

Editor training

All new editors should follow the free, self-paced PKP School training course Editorial workflow in OJS 3.5 or the text-based Learning OJS for Editors to learn the basics of the editorial process in OJS.

Journal managers (including editors in chief) should also follow the course Setting up a journal in OJS 3.5 – particularly modules 3-12 – or the text-based Learning OJS 3.5 for Journal Managers to understand the journal settings and how these interact with the editorial workflow.

Tip

Because YDJ is not implementing the default Editorial Masthead from OJS 3.5, any training materials pertaining to the Editorial Masthead (including Module 4, Unit 2 of Setting up a journal in OJS 3.5) will not by relevant to your operations. See Alternative implementation to Editorial Masthead for YDJ for details.

This document also includes a section with more detailed guidance on setting up a journal and reviewing journal settings for new journal managers. That section reflects local practices relevant to YDJ journals and suggestions based on local experience. However, journal managers should first complete the PKP Schools training to understand how the software works.

PKP School’s Becoming an editor course has more general information about editorial responsibilities and aspects of scholarly editing and publishing that aren’t tied directly to OJS software.

Peer reviewer training

If your journal engages in peer review, you may wish to familiarize yourself with the peer reviewer training resources to be able to respond to questions from your peer reviewers. PKP School has a free, self-paced PKP School training course Become a reviewer.
